Webworms in Trees
We have heard some residents are getting concerned about the worms on the walnut trees around the island. Don’t worry, these are NOT gypsy moth caterpillars. According to Doller Ave. resident, Dr. Carmen Trisler, these are fall webworms. Fall webworms eat the leaves of many species of deciduous trees and bushes. This damage occurs late in the summer shortly before the trees normally drop their leaves for fall. Therefore, fall webworms very rarely do serious damage to trees. In most cases the trees will grow their leaves back the following spring. On rare occasions, a tree that is already highly stressed may be further weakened by fall webworm damage. However, most trees, even heavily infested trees, are minimally affected and show no signs of damage the following spring.
Farewell Mother Mary!
Last month we learned Mother Mary Staley was leaving St. Paul’s, but the presses ran before we knew where she would be heading after leaving the island. Mo Mary headed to Kent, Ohio where she will serve as their (temporary) interim priest while they participate in a formal search process for their next priest. She plans to do other short-term assignments following her time at Kent, Ohio. We certainly wish her well in her new endeavors.

Interesting Reading in The Register
The Sandusky Register printed articles, an editorial and three parts of an ongoing series about the Put-in-Bay Police Dept. in August. If you have any interest in island dirt, and we’re not talking about the kind where the grapevines grow, you might want to find copies and read them.
