Camping on Put-in-Bay offers a chance to reconnect with nature. South Bass Island State Park is the only place on the island for campsite rentals.  Here, both primitive and full hook up sites are available.  There are even exceptional cliff sites with outstanding views of Lake Erie. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway, the South Bass Island State Park is the place to go!

Pack up your gear and hop on a ferry to Put-in-Bay.  Camping provides guests with a chance to stay overnight on the island on a budget.  The affordable site rates are similar to other Ohio State Parks.

The Campsite

The park offers 128 sites. Tent campers can reserve electric or non-electric sites.  For peak seasonal stays during May through mid-October, guests must make a reservation. Other features available for guests include limited dockage, flush toilet restrooms, showers, and a dump station. From primitive sites to full-hookup sites, the campsites have the perfect accommodations for all types of campers.

The RV park provides more modern accommodations than the tent camping. Full-service RV camping sites are available along with a dump station located in the State Park Campground to use when needed.

South Bass Island State Park is located on the southern end of the island. Here, a vast assortment of activities can take place.  Most notably, the lakeshore affords a variety of awesome Put-in-Bay Water Sports.  A rocky shoreline beach, jet ski rentals and more await visitors.  Also, a comfortable covered shelter house provides respite.

Getting Here

Whether you arrive on the Jet Express or the Miller Ferry, the South Bass Island State Park is only a 5-7 minute drive. Come to the island and go camping under the stars.  With limited light pollution, Put-in-Bay is an exceptional place for stargazing.

South Bass Island State Park Activities

Boating rentals are available at the state park and include powerboats, fishing boats, kayaks, and personal watercraft. Guests can also access the public boat launch.

Fishing is a popular activity at the state park. Not only will you be able to experience the exceptional lake views, but you can also catch a perch or walleye while you’re at it. The fishing pier is located near the park entrance. Guests who plan to fish must have a valid Ohio fishing license. Children under the age of 16 do not require an Ohio fishing license. Relaxing water, cool air, and a fishing pole in your hand is one of the best ways to relax at  Put-in-Bay!

Picnic Area:

The park also offers an exceptional picnic area for guests. This area is complete with seating and picnic shelter in case of rain. Children can also play at the park playground. This serene lakeside picnic area offers a quiet getaway for those wishing to escape the nightlife of the busy downtown area.

Watercraft Rentals such as jet skis, wave runners, dinghy’s, and powerboats and kayaks are available to rent. Explore the Lake Erie waters in from one of the many watercraft rentals for an experience to remember!

Step away from the campground and explore some of the most popular areas of the island. Put-in-Bay has many attractions for guests of all ages. One of the most popular things to do on the island is to explore by way of a golf cart. Let’s face it, when else do you drive a golf cart on an island? The island attractions offer plenty of golf cart parking which makes it the best and most efficient way to travel on Put-in-Bay. Some of the most popular attractions are listed below:

Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center

The Family Fun Center offers an assortment of activities, all in one place! The Butterfly House is a serene garden with hundreds of butterflies and flowers. Watch the butterflies in their natural environment and learn butterfly facts from staff members while you visit. Perry’s Cave is registered as an Ohio Natural Landmark and was discovered in 1813. Tours of the cave are available to visitors. Enjoy the natural beauty and learn about the historical significance of the cave.

Other popular attractions at the Family Fun Center include The Rock Climbing Wall, Fort aMAZE’n Giane Maze, and gemstone mining. Don’t forget to visit the two gift shops and bring home a souvenir to remember your visit!

Perry’s Monument

Rich with history, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was built to honor those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812. The 312 feet high monument is a sight to see! Guests who tour the monument will enjoy breath-taking views from the observation deck. On a clear day, you can see the United States and Canadian border!

Yes, reservations are required. Just like the vacation rentals on the island, the campsites sell out during the busy summer season.

Which ferry service should I take to the Put-in-Bay?

There are two ferry services for guests. The Jet Express is a passenger-only ferry that is perfect for the light packers. The Jet Express departs from both Port Clinton and Sandusky, Ohio.

The Miller Ferry allows both passengers and vehicles including cars, motorcycles, RVs, boats, and trailers aboard. The Miller Ferry departs from Port Clinton, Ohio.
