The Put-In-Bay Township Port Authority oversees all aspects of the airport. They are responsible for ensuring the facilities are maintained and remain safe for travelers. One interesting tidbit about the PIB Airport is that night operations are not permitted. This is due to the runway not having lights installed. Therefore, night operations which is defined as 30 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes before sunrise is prohibited. Pilots must also be sure to fuel up prior to heading to South Bass Island. This is because there are no fuel available at the Put-In-Bay Airport, nor the other two strips the Port Authority oversees.
The Airport Code for South Bass Island is 3W2, or 3 Whiskey 2. This couldn’t be a more appropriate label for an island such as Put-In-Bay. With the famous Roundhouse Bar and Whiskey Light, this is a fun island fact to have the airport be regarded as such. Pilots can opt to park their planes on the grounds for a nominal fee. Also, longer term options are available too. The runway itself is approximately 2,870 feet. This would be considered somewhat of a short runway. Therefore, this limits the types of aircraft that can utilize the strip safely.
