Things To Do
South Bass Island has so many famous activities to check out, so we made a list of the most popular to make it easier for you! The most popular and famous attraction is Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. This statue was originally built to honor the victory that Com. Oliver Hazard Perry was able to achieve in “The Battle of Lake Erie” during the War of 1812.
You can also check out the South Bass Island State Park and the famous South Bass Island Lighthouse. The location of the lighthouse is near the Miller Ferry Line dock on Put-in-Bay which has ferries come from Catawba. The State Park has picnic areas, restrooms, and anything else you could need. Another place you can check out is the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum! They have all kinds of cool artifacts and old trinkets from the island and those surrounding. The location of this museum is near the police station in downtown Put-in-Bay.
Getting Here
To get to the island you have to take one of two Put-in-Bay Ferries: The Miller Ferry or the Jet Express. Jet Express has two ferry dock locations in Port Clinton and Sandusky while the Miller Ferry has one dock location in Catawba. The Miller only services travel to Put-in-Bay Island and Middle Bass Island while the Jet can go to Kelley’s Island as well.
Once you get to the island we recommend getting a golf cart so you can check out all of the island attractions such as Perry’s Cave or the Butterfly House. Kayak rentals can be found near the Crew’s Nest. Coming from Marblehead? You can grab a dock spot from the crews nest as well. Don’t forget to see the Ohio State nature preserves either!
