Moss on the Rock
Kurt Rohrbacher
Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament
The weather finally got cold and it looks like it’s a go this year for the Kurt Rohrbacher Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament. The sign-on party will be at Topsy Turvey’s on Friday, Feb. 4th, from 6 to 9 p.m. Fishing will take place from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5th. The weigh-in will also be at Topsy Turvey’s on the 5th, at 4 p.m. There will be a banquet following the weigh-in at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club.
New this year are a kid’s division, sponsored by Cameo Pizza, and a women’s division, sponsored by the Put-in-Bay Gazette. The kid’s winner will receive a pizza party and the woman winner will receive a cash prize.
Safety on the Ice!
If you see someone fall through the ice, it is important not to go on the ice after them. Ice that breaks once will break again. The best thing to do is call for help and wait until it arrives.
Pancake/French Toast Breakfast
Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring a Pancake/French Toast Breakfast at the fire station on Sunday morning, February 6th, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. The PIB Fire Dept. volunteers will be flipping and serving. The cost is donation based and all proceeds go directly to funding your favorite local fire department! There’s nothing better than a hardy breakfast before going out on the ice.
Road Scholar Program:
Birding the Islands & Shores
The Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center is again offering Road Scholar learning adventures to the public on May 1st thruough 6th. Please spread the word to friends, family and others about these great programs. There’s no place like the Lake Erie Islands in spring: trees in bloom, blue skies and myriad birds passing through on their annual migration. Bring your binoculars, this is a good one. Take part in walks, lectures, bird banding and more, all led by local bird experts. For more information about these programs or to enroll, visit www.roadscholar.org.
2022 North Bass Tour
The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society’s popular North Bass tour will take place on Wednesday June 22nd. The theme this year will be Cheeseburger in Paradise. The tour will be limited to 50 four-person carts. The rain date will be the 23rd if needed. The museum will start taking reservations right after Memorial Day. Please do not call before then.
Changes This Season
Keep your eyes open as there are some things happening on the island this season. The main building project will be the renovation of the seawall at Perry’s Monument. On Catawba Ave., you’ll find a new, larger fire truck at the Last Resort Fire Truck Bar, plus a few changes at Mojito Bay. Work started on these places last fall. Also getting an unplanned makeover is the Forge, which suffered water damage just before the holidays. There’s also work going on at the Boathouse. The PIB Water Treatment Plant will be getting a new wastewater service line installed that will go up Sybil Blvd. CC and Cory Wisniewski have been busy renovating their West Shore home. There’s also a new addition on Robbie Morrow’s cottage on the Crew’s Nest property. And lastly, many haven’t seen the new paving on Catawba Ave. that was finished up last fall.
StoryWalk Trail
Looking for something to do outside? Head on over to the Put-in-Bay StoryWalk Trail on the corner of Langram and Thompson Roads. There’s a new story placed in memory of Justine Bianchi. “Listening with my Heart” is an awesome story sure to delight all ages. Thanks to Mark Wilhelm for braving the cool weather to assist in installing this story.
