Put-in-Bay Township Primary Election 2022: New Tax Levy for the Purpose of Providing Police Protection
In past years, the Township has contracted with the Village of Put-in-Bay for police services in the unincorporated portion of the township. The Township has relied upon the full portion of the Resort Tax Receipts and a portion of the General Fund to pay for this Police Contract, but the contract now exceeds those monies.
However, the demand for police services and staffing of police officers in the unincorporated areas of the Township have continued to increase, exceeding the expectations of the contract and the Township’s ability to pay the contract. As a result, the Township Trustees have examined different ways to provide the necessary coverage for police protection. This may include continuation of a contract with the Village of Put-in-Bay, it may be a contract with another established department or even a combination. In any case, the funds already available for use will no longer cover the cost of this service.
Ohio Revised Code 5705.19(J) allows for the Township to provide and maintain motor vehicles, communications, other equipment, buildings, and sites for such buildings used directly in the operation of a police department, for the payment of salaries of permanent or part-time police, communications, or administrative personnel to operate the same, including the payment of any employer contributions required for such personnel under section 145.48 or 742.33 of the Revised Code, for the payment of the costs incurred by townships as a result of contracts made with other political subdivisions in order to obtain police protection, for the provision of ambulance or emergency medical services operated by a police department, or for the payment of other related costs.
This is a request to the voters of the unincorporated portion of the Township for a NEW levy of 1.25 mills and will cost approximately $.125 cents for each $100 of property valuation, on a five (5) year basis for providing police protection to the unincorporated portion of the Put-in-Bay Township.
