Lake Erie Idol Supports the Island
The annual Lake Erie Idol contest held at the Reel Bar had another successful year. Seven contestants fought for the coveted first place award singing a variety of music each week. The judges, Ray Fogg, Duff Spatafore, and Mark, responded to the contestant’s singing with suggestions, encouragement and some prodding as well. The audience had the final say on who would be the 2021 Lake Erie Idol voting with their donations buckets designated for each singer. Jordan Belanger of Victory Station gathered the most votes, carrying home the win.
The Reel Bar donated the funds raised by the contest to the Food Pantry managed by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The food pantry offers food to those who need assistance throughout the year. New employees use it before the receive their first paycheck of the season, often returning items when they depart at the end of the summer. There are times it is hard to stretch a dollar in the winter months. The funds provided by the Reel Bar will ensure nobody on the island will be hungry this winter!.

Catawba Ave. Improvements
In September and October, the Ottawa County Engineer’s Office has scheduled an improvement project for Catawba Avenue on South Bass Island. The improvements will extend from the South Bass Island State Park to the Put-in-Bay village limits. The project will include pavement improvements along with the construction of paved shoulders, costing $697,000.
“The road was in desperate need of widening in order to accommodate the island’s unique traffic patterns,” engineer Ronald Lajti Jr. said.
Canadian Border to Open, but…
Canada announced in July that it will open the border to U.S. travelers on Monday, Aug. 9th. There are a few catches. First of all, you must show proof of being vaccinated, plus you need to take a Covid test showing you do not have the virus within three days of entering the country. Those spur-of-the-moment trips boaters like to make to Pelee will still not be allowed because Pelee is not on the list of approved entry points. Americans who want to visit their cottages will not be able to fly in with Griffing, but will need to drive across the border and then take the ferry from the Canadian shore.
