One of the best educational activities for kids that Put-in-Bay has to offer, the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center is sure to fascinate as well as teach. Here, you can learn so much about the flora and fauna of the Lake Erie Islands. In addition to a museum filled with exhibits about wildlife, the property has two cave sites, a frog pond, a nature trail, and butterfly gardens. The museum is home to over 200 taxidermied species of mammals, birds, and fish of North America. Self-guided tours are available, as well as narrated tours to get the most out of your visit.
Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center Events
The Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center also hosts a variety of great events on the island. Wild Tuesdays is a very popular one. On most Tuesdays in the summer, the Center hosts a guest speaker to educate on one particular natural element of the Lake Erie Islands. The schedule can be found here, with topics as varied as dragonflies, caves, and even the sun!
The Center, along with the Miller Boat Line, also hosts the Annual Stargazing Cruise. The cruise is an opportunity for guests to enjoy Put-in-Bay original wines and snacks and take in breathtaking views of the stars. Hosts from the Center will be present to enhance the evening. They will be showing you the constellations in the night sky as well as telling you about the Lake Erie Islands that you will be sailing around.
Another favorite island event is the Annual Pig Roast, which benefits the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center. There is a silent auction, live music and entertainment, and Put-in-Bay wine to be enjoyed with the hog.
The Center is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Additionally, it is open on weekends in May and September. Contact for more information on hours, activities, and events.
