Protect Yourself From The Sun While Visiting Put-in-Bay
We love summer vacation, especially when it is spent at Put-in-Bay! There are so many awesome things to do including swimming, boating, and exploring all the tourism spots. However, a lot of those activities involve you and your family members being exposed to the sun. Fortunately, we did our research and found five tips from the American Cancer Society for protecting yourself from the sun.
Tip Number One
Seek shade during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to avoid being in direct sunlight for too long. This is when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest.
Tip Number Two
Protect your skin with clothing if you plan on being outside for long amounts of time. This includes wearing lightweight, comfortable, and UV protecting garments like long-sleeve shirts and pants. You also want to make sure the articles of clothing you choose to protect your skin with are dry, not wet.
Tip Number Three
Use sunscreen! Sunscreen comes in a variety of forms nowadays, this includes sprays, lip balms, lotions, gels, and more. Make sure you read the labels on the packing, choose the right SPF for your activity, and apply properly, and often.
Tip Number Four
In addition to clothing, wear a hat. Wearing a hat helps protect your ears, scalp, forehead, and nose from the sun. A hat also helps lower the number of UV rays that reach your face from reflective surfaces like water. Hats are the perfect accessory to wear by the pool for this reason.
Tip Number Five
Choose UV ray blocking sunglasses. When purchasing sunglasses, check the label. It should say what percentage of UV rays they block. The ideal pair of sunglasses should block between 99% to 100% of UV rays.
In Conclusion
In addition to these tips, the American Cancer Society recommends remembering the following statement to help protect yourself against the sun: “Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap!” Meaning, slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses to protect the eyes and skin around them.
We hope you use these five tips to protect yourself from the summer sun.
We will see you at Put-in-Bay soon!
