Put-in-Bay Winters
Put-in-Bay, Ohio, along with other Lake Erie Islands, are beginning to close up shop for the winter months. Every year, South Bass Island hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the spring, summer and fall months. However, winter looks a little different on Put-in-Bay island. Downtown Put-in-Bay attractions get boarded up and winterized to protect infrastructure from freezing. Rental homes become empty as bachelorette parties will have to wait until the new year.
The island community takes their last much needed trips to the mainland to stock up on frozen foods and basic necessities to get them through the winter. Once the Miller Ferry/Jet Express stop running, the only way to commodities not offered in the general store is by plane.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial still stand tall to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie and Oliver Hazard Perry. Despite the fact there wont be any visitors for a few months, the monument will still be visible from Catawba and Port Clinton. Perry’s Cave will also have to wait a few months before guided tours are offered again. The South Bass Island State Park still has some of the best sunsets in the Midwest region of the United States. However, for the next few months the only people lucky enough to see the cotton candy sunsets will be the locals. Jet Skis and fishing boats will get replaced with ice shanties once the Lake freezes over.

The island is expecting to be much more prepared for such difficulties come 2021.
