Your Chance To Visit Other Islands
Fourteen Islands were represented at the Great Lakes Alliance Summit that took place on Lake Erie Islands early last month. Among those were Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and Drummond Island in Lake Huron. Lake Erie Islanders will have an opportunity to visit Beaver Island the first week in December when the PIB High School Panther Basketball Teams take part in the fourth annual Great Lakes Island Basket Tournament the first week in December. They will also be able to visit and take part in next year’s GLIA summit on Drummond Island.
FYI Planned Power Outage
FYI, for all Middle and North Bass residents. Ohio Edison is planning an outage on November 9th. The back up cable from South Bass to Middle Bass is being replaced and contractors will be boring 4 feet from the old cable and they are requesting that the power be de-energized. Engineers are saying it should take them between four and six hours. The outage should not affect any South Bass residents. If it does, it should be limited to customers on the East end from the corner of Chapman and State Route 357.

Thanks From Billy Market
What a phenomenal weekend we had at Oktoberfest! Perfect weather, great food and plenty of beer! I want to thank Ty Winchester, Austin Bolyard, Joe Bodenbender, Caroline Jackson, Brian Cultice and Bret Klun for all the hard work that they all put in to make this event happen. I also want to thank Karen Wilhelm and her crew, Krissy Hart and her Middle Bass crew, Rob Hard and Maria, Rob Mohn, Rudy Rence, Courtney Blumensaadt, Kristin Scarpelli and Allie Market for helping to pour out over 27 kegs of cold beer! Without all your help, we could never pull this off! I know I’ve missed someone, but thanks to ALL of you!
Outside Magazine Names
SBI State Park Best Campground in Ohio
Outside Magazine assembled a subjective list of the best campgrounds in every state and selected South Bass Island State Park for Ohio.
“The campground at northern Ohio’s South Bass Island State Park has a lot going for it,” reads the Outside write-up. “There’s the shade from a grove of massive oak trees, the view of Lake Erie from the campground’s perch atop a 40-foot-high limestone bluff, as well as a swimming beach and boat launch, all wrapped up in classic Great Lakes wilderness. Your camp will be only two miles from the mainland in Lake Erie, best explored by kayak or boat.”
Did You Know?
Did you know that the Dodge Woods Preserve, where children and adults enjoy the StoryWalk, was once seriously considered for the site of a factory which would employ islanders year round so they wouldn’t have to go on unemployment? Or that the Scheeff East Point Preserve was at one time bulldozed so a development of large, expensive lakefront homes could be built? Or that the Massie Cliffside Preserve was a woods full of trash and litter that took months to clean up and returned to its natural condition? Thanks to the PIB Township Park District these areas and others will remain natural and undeveloped for you and your family for generations to come. Please support the Put-in-Bay Township Park District levy when you go to vote on Tuesday, November 8th. We’re all better off with parks and preserves.
Thank You From Perry’s Monument!
Now that the 2022 season has ended, we want to send a big shout out to the Put-in-Bay community for your support of Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. Through COVID-19 highs and lows and changing masking requirements at the park, fluctuating staffing levels requiring changing schedules and routines, multiple events and the seawall restoration project, the community has been patient, understanding and supportive.
The annual observation of the anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, otherwise known as Historic Weekend, finally returned to pre-pandemic levels and was a huge success. This was a direct result of the hard work of our staff and volunteers, The Perry Group and tremendous community support. There are too many businesses and people to name everyone individually but please know that we are deeply appreciative for every one of you and the contributions you made to help us care for this special place and the people who visit.
Help for Sybil Blvd. Sewer
The Ohio EPA funded a $505,800 no-interest loan for Put-in-Bay to help cover the cost of the Village’s water and sewer project on Sybil Blvd. PIB’s mayor, Jessica Dress, was pleased for the help saying the project was needed to provide sewer service for the village’s water plant. The mayor added, “We were depending on that funding 100%. It’s great to know it came through as expected.”
Correction
In last month’s article about the police levy on the November ballot, we inadvertently wrote it was 1.1 mills. It should have been 1.5 mills. According to the County Auditor, the levy, if passed, will raise about $220,000.
