As I write this, the sun is shining and the temperature is in the high 60’s. A few days ago, white stuff covered my lawn. Next week it’s back to below freezing… Mother Nature’s version of April Fool’s, I suppose! One can only hope that the crocus, daffodils and tulips are mid-west tough and can hang on until those April showers and consistently warmer temperatures arrive!
Business continues though, no matter the weather! The Garden Club’s annual membership notifications/dues forms have gone out by email and are on our website. Please be sure to mail in your dues while you are thinking about it! The cost is only $20 for an individual annual membership. Checks can be made out to PIBGC and mailed to PIBGC, P.O. Box 815, PIB, OH 43456. If you haven’t received a dues renewal or are interested in joining, please check out our website, www.putinbaygardenclub.com for details or contact a Garden Club member to get the membership ball rolling. Planting day for downtown flower baskets is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th, weather permitting. The club is trying a new method of planting this year that requires far fewer volunteers for planting but will hopefully render some amazingly beautiful blooms throughout the summer season. Fingers crossed the 2026 season will be kinder to the health of our baskets than last year’s scorcher!
But speaking of hot, dry weather, what the club urgently needs is volunteers who are willing to commit to watering these hanging baskets on a recurring schedule over the summer months. Might you have an hour or two to spare once a week, once every other week? The new watering chair, Kathy Schrader, and I are working to create a watering schedule that ensures enough volunteers are available to keep the flowers watered daily (yes, even weekends). This is probably the largest ongoing effort for our club, and we would be most appreciative of any time you could spare. Please contact Kathy at (440) 773-5413 or me (419) 348-0383 if you would be willing to share some of your valuable time… and maybe meet a new friend or two! And to ease your mind, no previous watering experience is necessary. An in-person watering “tutorial” is held before we send you out on the watering cart.
