Heineman Winery produces 25 varieties of wine, as well as two non-alcoholic grape juices. And while Heineman Winery does ship their wine, they can only do so inside of Ohio. So, if you are joining us from out of state, you’ll need to get your fill in person at the Heineman Winery Gift Shop.

Heineman Winery makes and bottles all of their wines on-site, from grapes grown on the island. A glass of wine from the winery is a uniquely Put-in-Bay experience. If you are unsure which of their many varieties you’d like to take home with you, take part in a wine tasting in their wine garden.

Heineman sells its wines by the bottle or by the case. They have popular varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as more unusual varieties, like Gewurztraminer and Traminette. You can check out a complete list before coming to their online store here.

Crystal Cave

If you don’t drink wine, there’s still a great reason to stop by. Also on site is the remarkable Crystal Cave. Tours of this amazing Put-in-Bay landmark helped the winery survive prohibition when so many other Put-in-Bay wineries were forced to close their doors. There were 17 wineries on South Bass Island before prohibition, and Heineman Winery is the only one to survive it. That makes Crystal Cave a natural wonder worth checking out.

You can then enjoy a glass of Heineman Winery’s grape juice. They make grape juice from both varieties of grapes they grow, Concord and Catawba, and these are also available for purchase in the gift shop, as well as the online store. Note that while Heineman Winery can only ship their wines inside of Ohio, they can ship their grape juice anywhere in the world! So don’t worry when you run out of what you took home!

Testimonials

Lauren B: “I really enjoyed the in-depth tour that walks you through the steps of production. I appreciate that they happily answer questions. I’m amazed at what it takes and how this small team produces so much. The family is very friendly and takes pride in their product. The tasting room is very popular. You get a small sample with the tour. Grape juice is available for kids and non-drinkers. The ice wine is the most expensive, being made out of frozen grapes from the first frost. Many wines of differing dryness available. Shipping to any location in Ohio only and delivery to the boat available. The over 21 crowds can enjoy the beer garden. Small gift shop.”

Jasmine K: “I loved the wine tour and the Crystal Cave tour! Their wines are fabulous, especially the sweet Catawba wine! Beautifully located and just loved the whole atmosphere and the nearby Put in Bay was so glorious! Go there I recommend it highly. You won’t be disappointed.”

Nicholas T: “Fantastic experience and family-friendly too! The tour is $8 and includes the cave tour, wine tour, and a glass of wine or grape juice – the grape juice is divine. And they have wines for even the most stubborn of “I don’t like wine” people. Highly recommend this stop if you are going to Put-in-Bay.”
