Garden Club News
From Sheri Murphy, President
Welcome to spring…NW Ohio style!! Love the warmer, sunnier days when we get them, even if the wind and a few days of chilly precipitation keep us flexible with what gets done each day!
Membership dues and donations continue to come in and I thank each of you who are willing to help this club in our efforts to beautify and maintain the gardens here on the island. It is never too late to become a member, and you can do so by mailing your $20 to PIBGC, P.O. Box 815, PIB, OH 43456. Our website, www.PutinBayGardenClub.com is always a convenient way to find out what activities we have coming up throughout the season-please check us out!
Our first official “meeting” of the season will be our Flower basket planting on the morning of Wednesday, May 21st in DeRivera Park. If you are willing to assist with this, please call the contact person for that day, Jody Frimel (440) 320-6473, for a volunteer assignment. Also, that afternoon, a potluck get together is being planned for all PIB Garden Club members at my home to catch up with island friends and kick-off the start of a busy and fun 2025 season. If you are at all hesitant about joining in on the fun at our potluck, please don’t be! Give me a call – I can fill you in on what you can bring-even if it is only yourself! (419) 348-0383.
Keeping the flower baskets and the park gardens beautiful throughout the season takes a good amount of effort but can be fun when working with a friend! Grab a buddy and help Barb Mehling out with the watering schedule-she has a few spots left and a sign-up sheet with all necessary details. Give her a call at (419) 285-5792. Another volunteer option involves weeding the various gardens around DeRivera Park. Not anyone’s favorite job, but think of it as a useful reason to be outside, soak up some Vitamin D, greet some of the inquisitive visitors that admire these gardens and have the personal satisfaction of knowing you are a valued asset in maintaining the beauty of this magical island! Each of the park gardens requires 3-4 volunteers to keep it weed-free. Again, meet a new friend, or grab that buddy of yours and contact Barb Hunter at (216) 789-9003 for details. She would love to hear from you!
As I urged you above, please make use of our website to stay current on the events and opportunities we have planned for the season. As a teaser, some of the meetings we have on our 2025 schedule include the basket planting and potluck this month; an off-island excursion to Green Circle Growers in June; a watercolor workshop in July with our very own Island artist, Celeste Mycoskie; orchid care in August; tree health in September and another potluck in October. I hope to see many of you at many of these!
Probably the biggest news I must share at this point is our PIBGC’s Home & Garden Tour, which will take place on Wednesday, July 23rd, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plan now for a spectacular tour showcasing a number of island homes, both big and small, but all beautiful examples of islanders’ tastes and talents! Tour particulars will be forthcoming, but I can share that ticket sales will begin on May 15th. All those interested in attending will need to contact me at (419) 348-0383 for the 3 P’s…ticket Procurement, Payment and tour Particulars.
I am looking forward to assisting you with your reservation!!
I hope all this information is getting you excited about what PIBGC has to offer. We SO hope you can join us for what promises to be many fun and new adventures in 2025!
