Garden Club News
From Sheri Murphy, President
Welcome to fall – island style! Bright sunny skies, no rain and quite the number of island activities to keep us all busy outside. Sounds perfect for everyone…except for the brown grass in our yards, I suppose. Small price to pay in my opinion!
I would like to start off by giving kudos to our September speaker, Andrew Petrarca the owner of Petrarca Arborcare. He guided 16 of us around DeRivera Park on a sunny afternoon, providing pruning/trimming suggestions for the trees there, optimal planting replacements and graciously answering a myriad of questions from those in attendance. The man has a wealth of knowledge concerning tree health and care, but he also knows how to win over his audience. We were treated to some scrumptious cannoli before the tour even began. That man certainly knew the way to our hearts!
I am hoping many of you can make it to the Garden Club’s last get together of the season at Heinemans on Thursday, October 2nd. Dustin has kindly offered up the winery for our potluck, beginning at 3 p.m.
Please bring a dish to share and rely on Heinemans to quench your thirst with their large variety of beverages! (for purchase, of course!) See you there!
I am sure you have noticed ALL the hanging baskets around DeRivera Park have been taken down already—probably the earliest in club history. The plants just turned “crispy” with those continually sunny skies, very hot temps and no rain. Despite the valiant efforts of Barb Mehling and her daily watering crews, the flowers literally “bit the dust!” Much discussion has been had and will continue concerning different options/modifications we can incorporate for next year. Considering the talented and knowledgeable members of this group, I have no worries that the baskets in 2026 will be stellar!
As it is now October, the 2025 PIBGC season is drawing to a close. After my second year as president, I remain in awe and SO appreciative of the impressive efforts from the board members and many cherished volunteers who continue to share their valuable time and varied skills in keeping this club so vibrant. As I said last year and feel even more so now—there is no way I can thank all of you enough for your continued interest in and love of this club and island. Your passion and efforts are readily apparent to anyone who happens to stroll around downtown. I just pray that you all will continue to share your collective enthusiasm, dedication and skills as we move ahead to 2026. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
And as always, our most current and complete source of information concerning all garden club matters can be found on our website, www.putinbaygardenclub.com.
